I’m currently in Russia covering the Ice Hockey World Championships. Last night was the opening game between the host nation Russia and Denmark.Denmark got slaughtered 9-1 in a pretty one sided game, but it was kind of expected.

Usually the weekends are pretty easy. A soccer game or two to cover a day. Anyway this Saturday was crazy as hell and is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. The main reason for this madness is the paper has a soccer section in the paper because the season has just started. That meant I had to cover just about every team in the city! And not every team was playing at home. to make things nuts, I had an unrelated assignment during the mess and late at night. Here’s my Saturday as it went.12:09 PM - Avarta soccer club, opened a girls team for the first time in the club’s history.

A large construction project with a lot of new houses being build, basically creating a new neighborhood with a small scale mall, apartments, houses cafés ect is getting closer to being complete.I was assigned to shoot some photos of the construction work
Most of the homes are build in a sections in a factory in Sweden, then transported to Denmark on big trucks where the homes are put together in a matter of hours. (Photo: Brian Poulsen)Canon EOS-1D Mark II n, EF 17-40mm f/4 @ 17mm, f/4, 1/1250sec, ISO100
I think it’s safe to say that James Nachtwey is the modern time’s Robert Cappa. His photos from warzones and other areas of human disaster are quite exceptional and powerful. It is among his work I found the interest in photojournalism or documentary photography.James Nacthwey was one of three TED award winners this year. Here’s a link to his speech along with photos of some of his work. I highly recommend watching it.http://ted.streamguys.net/ted_nachtwey_j_2007_480.mov.Quicktime is required.
I covered a soccer match today. Supposedly it was played at a soccer stadium. It wasn’t a stadium. It was just a grass field. As far as I know a stadium has bleachers or stands. Also this ‘field’ was right next to houses making for some extremely ugly backgrounds. Here’s a perfectly nice photo ruined by a cluttered and really disturbing background.
Canon EOS-1D Mark II n, EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM + 1.4x TC @ 420mm, f/4 1/1600sec, ISO100 (Photo: Brian Poulsen)I’ve also come to learn that in gusty winds, a big lens like the 300mm (or 400mm for those who own that monster) is really getting pushed around.
